Auguste Rodin (French, 1840-1917) Fallen Angels, Sketch Circa 1890 Bronze with a green and brown patina with black undertones Produced using the sand casting process, probably at the Griffoul Foundry, Paris, circa 1900 Signed 'A. Rodin'
This fine quality cast is one of just two known examples produced in bronze, both by Rodin himself, in his lifetime. This first example was cast by the Griffoul foundry around the turn of the twentieth century. Some years later, from documentation, it appears Rodin cast a second example, this time at the Alexis Rudier foundry. The whereabouts of this cast are unknown which suggests perhaps it was in fact not of the Sketch, but of the finished model. Whether this piece is unique or not, it is certainly extremely rare, if two in fact did ever exist. There are no posthumous casts.
