‡ THÉODORE GÉRICAULT (FRENCH 1791-1824) LE SONGE D'ENÉE (THE DREAM OF AENEAS) Black crayon, pen and ink, wash and watercolour heightened with white 13.5 x 21cm (5¼ x 8¼ in.) Drawn circa 1815.Provenance: Edouard Aynard Collection Sale, Sotheby's, Monaco, 20th June 1987, lot 436 Galerie Prouté, Paris Private collection, Switzerland Sale, Sotheby's, London, 9th April 2002, lot 110 Executed in 1815, according to Professor Lorenz Eitner the drawing 'exemplifies the eccentric graphic style - marked by extremely heavy, angular pen contours - in which Gericault at that time explored classical subjects. This classicist episode in Géricault's work constituted a rather vehement reaction against his own earlier modern and realistic work of 1812-1814.' Condition Report: The sheet appears to have been laid down at the four extreme corners. Some light discolouration to the sheet. The colours are a little down, particularly the blue pigment. Some very light wear to the extreme edges commensurate with age. Some very light spots of minor surface dirt scattered throughout but these are barely noticeable. Undulation to the sheet under the glaze. Unexamined out of glazed frame.Condition Report Disclaimer

Feigen, New York) were previously ascribed to Baron Gros, with the attribution to Girodet, first suggested by Philippe Bordes. In the present lot the pencil drawing shows some indecisiveness about Zopyrus' figure, with the arm first extended toward the fallen Pyrrhus and then withdrawn in a shielding gesture. In the oil sketch, the gesture becomes even more protective, as Zopyrus throws his cloak over his head to block his view of the older general. Condition Report: Some discolouration to the sheet, and very light staining to the framing edges. Very light spots of foxing scattered throughout. Undulation to the sheet under the glazed frame. Unexamined out of frame.Condition Report Disclaimer

ABRAHAM SOLOMON (BRITISH 1824 - 1862), MOTHER AND DAUGHTER oil on board, signed and dated 1854framedimage size 36cm x 31cm, overall size 46cm x 41cm Note: Abraham Solomon (London 7 May 1823 – 19 December 1862 Biarritz) was a British painter. The second son of eight children born to Meyer Solomon, a Leghorn hat manufacturer and his wife Catherine (Kate) Levy. His father was one of the first Jews to be admitted to the freedom of the city of London, and the family resided in Sandys Street, Bishopsgate in east London. Two of Abraham's siblings were also artists: his sister, Rebecca Solomon (1832–1886), and his youngest brother, Simeon Solomon (1840–1905), who acquired much acclaim as an associate of the Pre-Raphaelites and exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1858 to 1872; his later crayon drawings of idealized heads are still popular. At the age of thirteen Abraham became a pupil in Sass's school of art in Bloomsbury, and in 1838 gained the Isis silver medal at the Society of Arts for a drawing from a statue. In 1839 he was admitted as a student of the Royal Academy, where he received in the same year a silver medal for drawing from the antique, and in 1843 another for drawing from the life. Solomon died in Biarritz in France, of heart disease, on 19 December 1862, the same day on which he was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy. He married, on 10 May 1860, Ella, sister of Dr. Ernest Hart; she survived her husband.
Dumas, Alexandre The Three Musketeers Translated by William Robson. London: George Routledge and Co., 1853. 8vo, viii 423 pp., contemporary half calf, half-title discarded, binding worn, splitting to joint-ends, contemporary ownership inscription to title-page, manuscript notes in pencil and blue crayon to final page and rear endpapers, a few similar corrections and markings in the text [cf. Sadleir 3758] First edition of this translation published as part of the Routledge's Railway Library series, which began in 1849: ‘This long-lived prolific and enormously successful series has been generally regarded as a pioneer venture in cheap-book publishing and as the originator of the shilling edition of popular fiction. Actually it was a deliberate and not altogether scrupulous imitation of the Parlour Library, which it sedulously copied in outward appearance as well as in appeal for public favour’ (Sadleir). The first edition in the original French was published in 1844, followed by the first English translation in 1846.

DALI SALVADOR: (1904-1989) Spanish surrealist artist. An extraordinary signed and inscribed presentation copy of Dali, edited and arranged by Max Gérard and with text in English translated by Eleanor R. Morse, First Edition published by Harry N. Abrams Inc., New York, 1968. The hardcover large 4to edition features over 250 illustrations (a few pages loose) with 80 colour plates and 23 in toned gravure. Signed by Dali with a large and highly attractive signature (´Dali´) to the verso of the front free endpaper in bold gold paint, the signature incorporating a gold crown and measuring approximatelt 23 cm in height. Dali has also added the date, 1969, in his hand beneath his signature. To the background of the page Dali has added a series of original ink drawings which include a man on horseback, a desert landscape with a mountain range in the background (which stretches across the title page) featuring a tall, slender figure, a woman and child walking together across the barren desert, the former holding an object in one oustretched arm, as well as a creature that is highly reminiscent of a manticore. Dali has further added a presentation inscription in his hand, also signing on behalf of his wife and muse, Gala, ´Pour Les Lions Den, Hommage de [Dali; being the printed signature that forms the title of the book] et Gala´, also incorporating a small element of gold paint. Bound in the publisher´s illustrated cloth and with a decorative embossed gold foil dust jacket. An exceptional signed presentation copy with excellent association. Some light age wear, largely to the dust jacket, about VGLeonard Lyons (1906-1976) American newspaper columnist for the New York Post where his column, The Lyons Den, became a New York institution covering theatre, movies, politics and art. A portion of the original wrapper for the book (inscribed ´Mister Lyons´ in black crayon) was retained by the recipient, along with a further sheet of large tissue paper inscribed in large letters in both black ink and pencil ´Mister Liyons will call for it´. Both are included in the present lot.It is highly probable that Dali signed the present book during one of his frequent stays at New York´s St. Regis hotel, where he and Gala occupied Suite 1610 on their annual visits, the room also featuring a studio where the artist could work.
LAGERFELD KARL: (1933-2019) German fashion designer. A wonderful original pencil and coloured crayon drawing executed and signed by Lagerfeld, one page, large 4to (approximately 19.5 x 28.5 cm), n.p., n.d. (1980s). On a sheet of Chanel printed stationery (featuring the interlocking CC monogram of Coco Chanel which Lagerfeld integrated into a style pattern for the House of Chanel in the 1980s) Lagerfeld has drawn an attractive full-length study of the slim Coco Chanel standing in profile, wearing a long skirt and matching jacket, and with a Chanel handbag hanging by its chain from her wrist. Lagerfeld has seemingly deliberately added more detail to the handbag, which features the interlocking CC monogram, reflecting on its importance as an iconic accessory of the Chanel brand. Lagerfeld has also prominently titled the drawing Gabrielle Chanel across the centre and added his signature at the base. Both Chanel´s name and Lagerfeld´s signature are written in black ink, adding a red outline (essentially a second signature) to both in order to attractively create the effect of a red ´shadow´. Matted in cream and framed and glazed in a plain black frame to an overall size of 12.5 x 16. A truly fabulous original drawing linking two of the 20th century´s most important fashion designers. VG
MIRO JOAN: (1893-1983) Spanish painter. A United States of America Federal Reserve One Dollar banknote featuring an original, bold purple crayon illustration by Miro (unsigned) to the recto, the abstract drawing open to interpretation, but possibly a representation of the Scales of Justice, imaginatively placed by Miro over the central portrait of George Washington. Accompanied by the original air mail envelope hand addressed by Miro to Madame Henriette Gomès at Rue du Cirque, Paris, signed (´Miro´) by the artist to the upper left corner and post marked at Paris, 10th July 1958. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, VGHenriette Gomès (d.1986) was a French art gallery owner who had been a model for Jules Pascin in the 1920s. Gomès first met Miro in 1934 and the two remained lifelong friends, and Gomès also collected several of Miro´s object-sculptures. The Galerie Henriette Gomès at Rue du Cirque exhibited works by Picasso, Balthus, Calder, Giacometti and Man Ray amongst others.
