Director of the Gestapo 1934-39, President of Interpol 1940-42 and Director of the Reich Main Security Office 1939-42. An interesting T.L.S., Heydrich, two pages (separate leaves), 4to, n.p., n.d. (1937), to the Reichsfuhrer-SS (Heinrich Himmler), in German. Heydrich writes concerning SS-Hauptscharfuhrer Dr. Krukenberg, explaining that further investigations have been carried out into him, and informing Himmler that ´Immediately after the seizure of power, a generous reform of broadcasting was carried out in line with the Reich reform, i.e. the individual stations were removed from the jurisdiction of the states and placed under the sovereignty of the Reich. K[rukenberg]. fought bitterly against this; he was of the opinion that the individual stations must continue to be available to the individual states and interest groups´, further remarking ´After Krukenberg was transferred to the Reich Ministry of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda, serious differences arose between him and the Reich Propaganda Ministry....From the outset, the party was of the opinion that radio broadcasting should be primarily an instrument of political and ideological propaganda and should be used and developed accordingly. During the propaganda campaign that began immediately after the seizure of power, with speeches by the Führer and the Reich leaders and Reich speakers, Krukenberg took the view that it was essential for the individual interest groups (i.e. representatives of industry, trade, agriculture, etc.) to have their say´. Heydrich continues to write ´Krukenberg undoubtedly joined the NSDAP solely for economic reasons. Through the personal intervention of Reich Minister Dr. Goebbels, he was removed from the radio in August 1933, primarily because of his personnel policy and his non-National Socialist behaviour. Since only a small circle of people are familiar with the Krukenberg affair, further investigations were inconclusive´ and ends by stating ´In summary, it can be said that there are serious concerns about Krukenberg, both because of his character and his ideological stance´. With a few official ink stamps and annotations, including one in green indelible pencil in the hand of Himmler to the upper part of the first page. Two file holes to the left edge of each page and with a few staple holes and rust stains to the upper left corners, otherwise VGHeinrich Himmler (1900-1945) Nazi German politician, Reichsfuhrer of the Schutzstaffel (SS) 1929-45.Gustav Krukenberg (1888-1980) German SS-Waffen General of World War II, commander of the SS Charlemagne Division and the remains of the SS Division Nordland during the Battle of Berlin in April 1945.

Lot 1110

PAPEN FRANZ VON: (1879-1969) German politician and diplomat who served as Chancellor of Germany in 1932 and as Vice-Chancellor under Adolf Hitler 1933-34. Typescript Manuscript signed, F V Papen, seven pages (separate leaves), 4to, n.p., 24th November 1956, in German. The manuscript, with several holograph corrections in pencil, is entitled Die Weltkrise in deutscher Sicht (´The global crisis from a German perspective´) and states, in part (translated), ´...Rarely has the civilised world been shocked deep down as much as in the last days and weeks at the Hungarian tragedy. Anyone who knew this brave little people knew that they would value their freedom above anything else in the world. The agony of this nation, whose youth, what remains of it, is now being departed to Siberia by the Soviets, as well, to complete what 10 years of Bolshevist education could not achieve, is a shining memorial warning to all those in the Western world who until yestarday believed in the possibility of coexistence.....What turned the drama of these events into a full-blown tragedy for the rest of Europe was the Anglo-French intervention at the Suez Canal. One will be able to accept everything that has been cited as an excuse for this intervention: the securing of the Canal from the effects of the Israeli attack, the prevention of powerful Russian ´voluntary forces´being sent in support of Nasser´s intended attack on Israel. The immense arsenals found and seized by the Israelis in the Sinai prove that powerful Russian ´voluntary forces´ destined to be deployed here. There is every indication that the Kremlin wanted to use this presumed attack by Nasser on Israel to tear open the Near-Eastern flank of NATO. The game the Kremlin is playing with the Arab countries has long included this scheme. Here it would strike a blow to the most sensitive point of the Atlantic defenses and at the same time the oil supply of Europe.....Germany could also contribute to removing the canker of Arab agitation: the camps of Arab refugees from Palestine which have become a breeding ground for anarchist propaganda. The Arab states have already appealed to Bonn to stop the annual payments of 310 million to Israel, an aggressor nation. We have made these payments to atone for a terrible crime, but it is beyond doubt that these supplies of goods of all kinds also bolster Israel´s war potential.....The outcome of the world crisis is completely uncertain. For us Germans only a small measure of involvement is possible, But we should not entrench ourselves behind [the excuse] that we can do nothing in our situation. Just as we would like to see the experience and wisdom of the Spanish statesmen made use of in treating the Arab problem, we also wish for our part to have a role in the focal points of world politics, Europe has one last chance. Let us make use of it......´. Signed by Papen in pencil at the conclusion. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, VG

DUMAS ALEXANDRE: Pere (1802-1870) French novelist and playwright whose works include The Three Musketeers (1844). A good A.L.S., `Al. Dumas´, one page, 12mo, black bordered paper, n.p. [Paris], n.d., to Mr. Porcher, in French. Dumas, as usual and one more time asks for money even if it´s just to pay off debts, stating `Mon cher Porcher, Donnez-moi 100 fr. dont j´ai besoin pour achever le paiement d´un billet...´ (Translation: "My dear Porcher, Give me 100 francs which I need to complete the payment of a debt. " Further and to a postscriptum, Dumas says `Vous savez que Bocage rentre par La Tour de Nesle.´ (Translation: "You know that Bocage starts with The Tour de Nesle") Small stain, not affecting the text or signature, otherwise GBocage (1799-1862) his real name being Pierre-Martinien Tousez, known as Bocage, French popular Actor. A talented but undisciplined artist born into a poor family. Bocage often used his position to have the Odéon´s performances serve revolutionary propaganda, being fired from this theater in 1848 for anti-government activities. La Tour de Nesle is a drama in five acts, based on the circumstances of the Tour de Nesle affair. The play premiered at the Theatre de la Porte-Saint-Martin on 29th May 1832.

Lot 1106

MUSSOLINI BENITO: (1883-1945) Italian Fascist Dictator of World War II. An interesting D.S., Mussolini, five pages (separate leaves), 4to, n.p., n.d. The document, in English, is an orginal typescript of an interview conducted by Mussolini with Major E. W. Polson Newman and is entitled Mussolini Speaks on Europe Today. The text bears a number of additions and deletions in Newman´s hand and states, in part, ´I admit that the political and economic situation in Europe today is bad, but I can assure you that the interests of Italy lie in the direction of peace. I want peace for the further development of the Fascist regime, so that Italy may have suitable conditions in which to carry out further improvements…...in communications…...in the increase of cultivation, and in hydro-electric progress. I want Italy to become a still greater country, and to be as self-supporting as possible.......With the heavy burden of world depression, it is all the more necessary that there should exist a peaceful atmosphere in which an economic recovery can take place. I agree with you…...that 'the general policy of European co-operation and the status quo do not harmonize and cannot long continue to exist side by side'. There is a general attempt in Europe today to have everything both ways, which is impossible. The nations must choose which course lies in their best interests and follow that course......The question of the Polish Corridor and that of the Hungarian frontiers are serious problems......The conditions imposed upon the Hungarians by the Treaty of Trianon cannot be regarded as justice, and we in Italy.....would like to see something done to improve the position of these close neighbours......Another question of the greatest importance to Europe is that of 'disarmament'. It is at present impossible to express any opinion on the actual prospects…. but it is satisfactory that it has been possible to arrange an international conference on the subject......A considerable reduction in the large sums of money spent on armaments would be a great help to the economic distress through which Europe is now passing. But to disarm beyond the margin of safety would be the greatest folly. A nation must be ready and fit to defend itself against attack and to protect its interests when threatened by aggressive neighbours. The subject of 'reparations' has again arisen in an acute form, and something will sooner or later have to be done to set this matter on such a footing that Europe is relieved of its evil effects on trade and commerce. The help of the United States will be necessary for a settlement of this question, but Europe must settle her own differences herself and uphold her complete independence......You ask me about Italy's economic relations with Russia, and whether there is any question of these relations being extended to a political understanding......Two countries with such entirely different systems of government and such widely divergent social principles could not possibly co-operate politically, but there seems no reason why they should not buy each other's goods.... As far as Communism in Europe is concerned, I think it is important to realise that the youth of today is usually either Communist or Fascist. They are seldom Socialist. The time has now come when it may be said that Socialism has definitely failed......Socialism has merely produced unemployment and discontent, and has paved the way for Communism......Fascism, on the other hand, has much.....to show as results of its labours, and there is no better advertisement for the Fascist system than the progress of the last ten years through the length and breadth of Italy. If you compare the conditions now prevailing under Socialist regimes with the rapid progress and general contentment arising out of hard work and national enterprises well carried out, you will have no difficulty in seeing that Socialism is degrading, while Fascism raises the moral and physical well-being of mankind. Continual accusations are being made against the Fascist regime in Italy, and they come chiefly from people of the left who worship a false political ideal, and are ready to sacrifice the welfare of a whole nation in order to carry out the political principles to which they have become utter slaves......Among the greatest enemies of Fascism are the societies of freemasons, whose propaganda is always trying to discredit the present government in Italy.......Recently the Italian troops in Libya have been the object of their attacks. These brave men, who have penetrated far into the Libyan Desert under the most difficult conditions, have been accused of cruelty to the conquered native inhabitants. There is naturally no truth whatever in these accusations......What really is cruel is to bring false charges against these fine soldiers, who have undergone untold hardship and risked their lives for Italy. You ask whether I think the Communist danger to be a real one for Europe. In France it is not a danger, nor do I take too serious a view of the danger in Spain; but in Germany, it is a very serious matter. With the distress caused by the world depression, with the burden of Reparations, and with such a vast army of unemployed, the situation is dangerous......At the same time, I think the political tendency today is towards the right in Europe......But it should never be forgotten that a Communist Germany in co-operation with Soviet Russia would constitute a very serious menace to all Europe´. Signed by Mussolini at the foot of the final page. Accompanied by two facsimile copies (1960s) of letters from Newman and an Eric W. Campion (who had acquired the document for his autograph collection); Newman´s letter, dated 12th May 1948, to Campion states, in full, ´In reply to your advertisement in Saturday´s Times, I have some autographs of such people as Ribbentrop, von Neurath etc. If you will let me know about how much you are willing to offer, I will then know whether it is worth while looking them out from amongst my papers´, and Campion´s letter, dated 3rd July 1962, is addressed to Maggs Bros., and states, in part, ´Further to our conversation today re the interview between Mussolini and Mr. E. W. Polson Newman in about 1930, I am sending the original letter in Mr. Newman´s autograph, which I received in 1948 when he was editor of the Oxford University Press. The Mussolini document was purchased by me, direct from Mr. Newman......I met him at his office.....and I remember how well he spoke of Mussolini, who he knew well as a personal friend. As the letter will help you to authenticate the document......I am giving you permission to photostat the letter´. A single file hole appears in the upper left corner of each page, and some also have a few small pinholes and paperclip rust stains. This lot has been cleared against the Art Loss Register database, and is accompanied by an illustrated lot declaration signed by the Head of the Antiquities Department, Dr Raffaele D'Amato.Comparison with contemporary coinage confirms that this bust with its prominent nose, chin, curly hair and forked tip beard, represents Septimius Severus (193-211 A.D.), and the image certainly conveys the strong character of the commander who led the Roman army to victory, not only in Europe but also in the Middle East. A similar portrait can be seen on the cameo in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (accession no.99.368). In the Boston cameo the emperor is likewise seen in profile, facing right, and his beard, with the forked tip, is identical. Another good comparison is with the cameo of the Imperial family preserved at the Cabinet des Medailles, Paris (Petruccioli, 2011, fig.230). Cameos and rings of this typology were often gifted and gifted to members of the Imperial entourage, and were a great instrument of Imperial propaganda.TimeLine Auctions follows a rigorous vetting process to ensure the authenticity and legality of all items, reinforcing our commitment to integrity and responsible trading.
