Located on the slope of the Capitoline Hill, it was probably destroyed soon after Nero's death in 68. The only known representations of the arch are those found on coinage

About very fine, red-brown patina, some roughness on reverse £90-£120 --- Provenance: Bt Seaby 1972 Traditionally, this countermark has been attributed to Nero, with its assumed that the letters NCARP represents an abbreviation of Nero Caesar Augustus Populo Romano (see RIC p.11). However, the presence of a coin of Vespasian carrying this same countermark in the Pangerl collection renders this attribution problematic.

Lot 1609

Hadrian (117-138), Hadrian, Sestertius, 119-20, laureate bust right, draped across far should, imp caesar traianvs hadrianvs avg p m tr p cos iii, rev. Very fine, glossy green patina with some minor porosity; a very rare and historically significant type £600-£800 --- Provenance: SNC May 1974 (4218) In 119 Hadrian wrote off 9 million Sestertii in tax arrears, owed to the state by private citizens. Records were publicly burned and an inscription celebrating Hadrian’s generosity was erected in the Forum of Trajan. A small issue of coinage also commemorated the event, today specimens are rare and difficult to acquire in any grade above fine.

Fields smoothed, otherwise very fine, the reverse remarkably well detailed; a very rare coin with an exceptional pedigree £500-£700 --- Provenance: E.W. Lot 1602

Nero (54-68), Nero, Sestertius, Lugdunum, 66, Countermarked under Vitellius in 68, laureate bust right, small globe at point of neck, nero clavd caesar avg ger p m tr p imp p, rectangular countermark in field behind head [VT E] rev. Neor prancing right on horseback, holding spear, accompanied by cavalryman behind holding vexillum over shoulder, decvrsio in exergue, 26.91g/6h (RIC 395; BMCRE –). Very fine with attractive glossy green patina; the countermark clear and very rare £600-£800 --- Provenance: Found in Lincoln; F.A. Walters Collection, Hess Auction 211, Lucerne, 9 May 1932, lot 383; H.P. Hall Collection (Part II), Glendining Auction, 16-21 November 1950, lot 1077; Bt Spink The Decursio was a military exercise and exhibition of equestrian skills instituted by Nero for the prætorian guard. Some coins show the horseman being led by a foot-soldier – a depiction hardly suitable for the portrayal of an emperor. The countermark on this coin, which is very seldom found, was applied under Vitellius. The reason for its application is unclear, but it might reflect an attempt by Vitellius to promote his role in donative payments made to troops using existing specie.
