The Chris Skellern Collection 1966 Honda 305cc CL77 Street Scrambler Registration no. AGS 524D Frame no. CL77-1053326 Engine no. CL77E-1056482 Introduced in 1960, the CB72 and CB77 retained the basic layout of the preceding C70 and C71 but with wet sump lubrication and a gearbox-mounted clutch. In addition, these sporting CBs changed to a 180-degree crankshaft and twin carburettors, and used a tubular spine frame instead of the pressed-steel chassis of the tourers. With a maximum power output of 28.5bhp at 9,000rpm and weighing just 350lbs, the 305cc CB77 possessed an excellent power-to-weight ratio endowing it with performance challenging that of many British 500s. The CB's specification: overhead-camshaft engine, electric starter, rev counter, and twin-leading-shoe brakes, was unmatched by any of its rivals. In 1962, Honda introduced CL72 and CL77 'street scrambler' variants, aimed at the North American market, which boasted an upswept exhaust system, sump 'bash' plate, wider handlebars, and serrated footrests among other off-road adaptations, though the fitting of a telescopic steering damper was an unusual departure for such a model. Today these CL street scramblers are ranked among the most sought after of early Japanese classics. Imported from the USA circa 2016 and first registered in the UK on 2nd February 2018, this CL77 has had only one owner in this country. The machine has been restored since acquisition and has covered some 500 miles since the rebuild's completion. The engine was rebuilt by the vendors dealer workshop and included a rebore, new pistons and rings, cam chain, tensioner, cam sprocket, seals and gaskets and we're advised that it started first kick after rebuild. The carburettors have also been ultrasonically cleaned and rebuilt. Notable features include aluminium wheel rims and a new-old-stock exhaust with correct welded-on silencer and correct longer heat shield. The vendor advises us that the Honda has covered 13,750 miles in total, with 1,203 showing on the odometer currently fitted. Accompanying paperwork consists of a VJMC dating letter; DVLA correspondence; an MoT certificate (expired January 2019); and a large quantity of restoration invoices. Offered with key Footnotes: All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding.
