The Chris Skellern Collection 1964 Honda 250cc CL72 Street Scrambler Registration no. DAP 734B Frame no. CL72-1100068 Engine no. CL72E-1100096 Introduced in 1960, the CB72 retained the basic layout of the preceding C70 and C71 but with wet sump lubrication and a gearbox-mounted clutch. In addition, the sporting CB changed to a 180-degree crankshaft and twin carburettors, and used a tubular spine frame instead of the pressed-steel chassis of the tourers. With a maximum power output of 24bhp at 9,000rpm and weighing just 340lbs, the CB72 possessed an excellent power-to-weight ratio endowing it with performance challenging that of many British 500s. The CB's specification: overhead-camshaft engine, electric starter, rev counter, and twin-leading-shoe brakes, was unmatched by any of its rivals. In 1962 it was joined by a CL72 'street scrambler' variant, aimed at the North American market, which boasted an upswept exhaust system, sump 'bash' plate, wider handlebars and serrated footrests among other off-road adaptations, though the fitting of a telescopic steering damper was an unusual departure for such a model. This example of a Honda motorcycle rarely seen outside North America was first registered in the UK on 1st July 2022. Our vendor is the sole UK owner. Only some 100 miles have been covered since the machine was restored, the engine was rebuilt by the vendor which included new piston rings, new camshaft bearings, cam chain, new kickstart spring, seals and gaskets and we're advised it started first kick after rebuild. The carburettor was ultrasonically cleaned and rebuilt. (the current odometer reading is 14,855 miles). Notable features of this aluminium-mudguard model include re-chromed exhausts, wheel rims, handlebars, etc; a newly fabricated front mudguard; and a reproduction seat. Accompanying paperwork consists of DVLA correspondence; copies of marque-related literature; a V5C Registration Certificate; and a substantial quantity of invoices for parts and services relating to its restoration. The vendor advises us that the bike tends to jump out of second gear, hence it is sold strictly as viewed. Offered with key Footnotes: All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. AUCTION INFORMATION & GUIDE FOR BUYERS Please see the Auction Information and Guide for Buyers at the top of the main sale page (Motorcycles Online - The Summer Sale) for all pertinent information regarding bidder's obligations, viewing, bidding, payment, post-sale collection & transportation.
